Brewskis arteries

Knocking back a couple of cold ones (like these 6 acceptable post-workout beers) or enjoying a cocktail or two has been shown in the past to help with heart health, but going overboard daily—meaning more than one or two drinks a day—can increase the risk of high blood pressure, obesity, and stroke.

A recent study showed that heavy drinking may also stiffen the arterial walls, squeezing blood flow and increasing the risk of heart disease. Researchers analyzed the drinking habits of almost 4,000 U.K. residents over 25 years of age, and found that moderate drinking is linked with a reduced risk of heart disease, but heavy drinking—more than 3.9oz of pure alcohol per week—has the opposite effect.

Tasting dairy free milk

As dairy-free milk alternatives flood supermarket aisles, wading through the options to find the best—and best-tasting—choices can be daunting. So we raided every grocery within a kettlebell’s throw of our offices, rounded up all the brands we could find, and, with the help of Atlanta nutritionist Marisa Moore, R.D., and a gang of Men's Fitness taste testers, did all the heavy lifting er, drinking for you.

Almond Milk: The all rounder

This also has a dairy taste but packs fewer calories. Bonus: Almonds have the most calcium of all nuts. As with any non-dairy choices, beware of mega added sugar (one we tried had 13g!).

Cashew Milk: On the light side

Cashew milk has zero sat fats, few calories, and is fairly creamy. Our testers’ main impression, though: “Meh.” It also has virtually no protein. But for dieting, we say Yea.

Hemp Milk: Friendly fat

The least “milk-like,” hemp can be an acquired taste: In our test, it got the fewest points—and the most grimaces. But it can be a wise choice: “Hemp has more omega- 3s than other options, plus a bit more protein,”

Coconut Milk: Non-dairy dessert

Rich and creamy, coconut’s perfect for smoothies. But with lots of saturated fat, it’s not so heart-smart, so don’t drink it daily.

Watering margarita

Invented sometime in the 1930s or ’40s (depending upon whose story you believe), a basic margarita should always be simple and easy to replicate, says Derrick Turner, brand advocate for 1800 Tequila. You just need four ingredients: tequila, lime juice, something orange flavored (alcohol, juice, or bitters), and a sweetener. From there, the variations you can create are infinite.

Roast beef melt

Most people think of beef as a fattening food, but roast beef is as lean as chicken or turkey and is loaded with lean muscle-building nutrients like protein, iron, and zinc. Plus, the pepper used to flavor this sammy has fat-fighting power from the compound peperine, which studies have shown helps to reduce the activity of genes that form fat cells.
